En la consulta con un adolescente (1ªParte)

Antonio o Clara (nombres ficticios), tienen que acudir esta mañana a la consulta de la Unidad de Conductas Adictivas. La verdad es que en la mayoría de los casos ellos no tienen ni idea de a dónde van a ir y menos qué se hace en ese sitio..., están convencidos de que es una exageración más de sus padres, que como viven en otra “época” no saben los "beneficios” que aporta el fumarse unos porritos a lo largo del día, tal y como lo explican claramente las páginas de internet dedicadas a la venta de Marihuana.

Lo que tienen claro es que nadie les va a "comer el coco", como llevan sus padres intentando desde hace meses... La verdad es que sólo de pensarlo, se ponen nerviosos y necesitan un porro para calmarse y olvidarse.

Otros “comedores de coco” son los profesores que no entienden que cada día se enteran menos de lo que se dice en clase y a menudo necesitan fumarse otro porro para "relajarse" antes de entrar al instituto y no estresarse en clase, pues hay profesores que los ignoran y dejan en paz, pudiendo aislarse en sueños de ojos abiertos; pero hay otros que se empeñan en molestarles y hacerles preguntas de lo que se está hablando en clase, ¿qué clase? si no saben ni de qué asignatura habla; y claro llega un instante en que por mucho que insista no van a aprender algo que no les interesa y que piensan que seguro jamás llegarán a necesitar; entonces explotan y deciden no volver al aula y más adelante no volver al centro.

En casa tampoco les gusta estar pues es frecuente que sus padres no paren de discutir, insultarse e incluso en alguna ocasión lleguen a las manos; el motivo casi siempre es el mismo: "NO hay dinero". Al final el padre se suele ir al bar y la madre se queda llorando de rabia e impotencia.

Su grupo de amigas y amigos también han cambiado, ya no van ni con los más cercanos de su barrio ni con los compañeros de clase pues ya han repetido varias veces. Sólo hay un grupo que los acepta sin hacer preguntas ni reproches, donde hay otros como ellos, a los que no les gusta estudiar ni volver a casa: son los consumidores de porros...

Es frecuente también que lleguen con una historia personal - a pesar de su corta edad - de: maltrato, bullying, hasta de abusos que pocas veces es conocida por las familias y por lo tanto pendiente de resolver.

Cuando entran, llevan tanta presión en sus vidas que pienso que la adicción a la Marihuana, Móvil o Apuestas es una válvula de escape para no volverse locos o cometer un atentado contra su vida, aunque para algunos no es suficiente y lo intentan...

In consultation with an adolescent (part 1)

Antonio or Clara (fictitious names), have to go this morning to a consultation at the Unit of Addictive Behaviours. The truth is that in most cases they have no idea where they are going and know even less about what is done in the Unit...they are convinced that they are going to a consultation because of yet another exaggerated reaction from their parents who grew up in another "era", and don’t know the "benefits" of smoking a few joints throughout the day, as Internet pages dedicated to the sale and medicinal qualities of Marijuana attempt to persuade.

What they know for sure is that no one will convince them otherwise, as their parents have been trying for months. The truth is that just thinking about it gets them nervous to the point that they need a joint to calm down.

Other people trying to convince them are their teachers who don’t understand that every day they hear less of what is being taught in class and often need another joint to "relax" before school to deal with the expected stress. There are teachers who ignore them and leave them alone, allowing them to daydream during class; there are others who insist on bothering them by asking questions about what is being talked about in class. There comes a time when no matter how much they insist, they aren’t going to learn something that doesn't interest them and they think that they will surely never need. This could lead to them exploding and deciding not to return to the classroom and later on to the centre.       

They don't like to be at home either, due to their parents often arguing and insulting each other, with it sometimes even resulting in physical blows; the reason is almost always the same: "there is NO money". In the end, the father usually goes to the bar and the mother stays home crying with rage and feeling helpless.

Their group of friends has also changed; they no longer hang out with the closest people in their neighbourhood or with their classmates because they have already repeated course several times. There is only one group that accepts them without questions or reproach, where they can find people like them who don't like to study or go home: they are fellow Marijuana consumers.   

It is also frequent that they arrive at the Unit of Addictive Behaviours with a personal story, despite their young age, of mistreatment, bullying, or even abuse that is rarely known by the families and therefore waiting to be discussed and resolved.

When they enter, they carry so much pressure from their lives that I think their addiction to marijuana, mobile phones, or gambling is a way to avoid going crazy or committing an attempt on their lives, although for some of them it is not enough.
